A.S.U.U Suspends Three Months Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (A.S.U.U) has called off the three months strike that began on November 5, 2018, after signing agreements with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The strike was suspended after a two-hour meeting with the Minister of Employment, Dr Chris Ngige and the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on Thursday, February 7, 2019.
Dr. Ngige said after the meeting ended that the areas of conflict had been discussed and agreed by the two parties. One of the outcomes is the issuance of a license to run the Universities Pension Management Company.
“The visitation panel has been constituted and will commence work on March 2, 2019. On the issue of Earned allowances, the Federal Government has released N20bn for the payment to all categories of university staff. For the Earned academic allowance, the Federal Government has released N25bn and for the revitalization fund, a total of N25bn will be released in the period of April and May 2019 and will resume full implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding entered into in 2019.”
It was also agreed that the Government’s team would hold another meeting on Monday 9th and conclude its work on or before 29th March 2019.
A.S.U.U president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced that the decision of the Union to call off the strike would take effect on February 8, 2019.
